Tadpole summer By Jason Whitaker Patter patter patter patter. This is the sound of a tadpole summer. Every year when school gets out and the children began to play, I take a walk to the pond above my house. The pond by then is dry except for a few misplaced mud puddles and an occasional stream of water. I spend my days studying the tadpoles that flop around on the parched earth searching for nutrients in the barren soil. It is a quite humbling experience to realize that just a month ago those very tadpoles were born into a wonderful world full of life giving water. Unfortunately, within a day, their lives were changed because of a farmer. A cynical man who annually drains the pond in order to feed his trees. I suppose this is the price of agriculture, but at what point do we become the tadpoles?
